We will explore two cases of the use of problem solving as a teaching methodology in Brazilian public schools. Some aspects of the traditional culture for the teaching and learning in our schools will be confronted with problem solving in classrooms. In addition, we will point out some changes on the students´ cognition and their motivation for the learning of Mathematics, as well as about the improvement on the teachers´ training, concerning this methodology.
