Causal set theory is a discrete approach to quantum gravity, where the Lorentzian spacetime continuum is replaced by locally finite partially ordered sets. The latter, which we call a "causal set" is a discretisation of the causal structure of the spacetime. In this talk I wish to present the broad mathematical aspects of the theory. I will focus in particular on the "geometric reconstruction" of the continuum from the causal set, where order invariants are used to reconstruct the geometry and the topology of the spacetime.
