Sonja Berthel (Vrije Universitet, Amsterdam): Entanglements in (molecular) graphs
The first half of this talk will give an overview of entanglements in molecules and crystals, as well as their previous study in topological graph theory. The second part will introduce and compare different types of entanglements in embedded graphs. We will focus on minimal knotted graphs, which are graphs that do not contain a non trivially knotted or linked proper subgraph but that are not embedded in the plane.

Myfawny Evans (University of Potsdam): Tangled networks on surface scaffolds
Using surfaces as scaffolds provides a nice way to examine complicated three-dimensional structures. For example, a carbon nanotube is most easily described as a tiling by hexagons on a cylinder, and a virus structure as a tiling on the sphere. As the genus of the surface increases, these three-dimensional structures can become knotted, linked and entangled. This talk will give an overview of the interplay between networks, tilings and hyperbolic surfaces in the context of a stunning example of a self assembled block copolymer system. The talk will focus on constructive techniques and interactions with applications, with no specific prior knowledge required.
