In quantum theory, certain observables may yield negative values even if their classical counterparts are nonnegative. This applies in particular to the averaged energy density in quantum field theory, which can yield negative values even in the vacuum state, unlike the energy density in classical field theories. Likewise in quantum mechanics, the probability flux of a particle may be negative even when its momentum is positive with probability one. Quantum inequalities are lower bounds to these effects; that is, the aim is to find a lower bound to the spectrum of operators which have positive “classical” counterparts. Such quantum inequalities also have relations to information theory, since the relative entropy of certain states in relativistic quantum information is linked to the energy density. In this talk I will give an overview of such inequalities and point out future research directions.
