This talk will introduce the use of geometric ideas in the characterisation and analysis of biophysical systems. Triply-periodic minimal surfaces and their occurrences in nature will provide the platform to talk about the characterisation of more complicated tangled systems and their functionality. An example of this is the woven keratin microstructure of human skin coordinating the swelling and wrinkling of skin in water. The talk will be aimed at a general audience, including lots of examples, and borrowing from a variety of mathematical and physical disciplines.
