Jet bundles and partial differential relations allow a coordinate free characterisation of many topological and geometric structures, including immersions and submersions, symplectic and contact structures, and curvature restrictions. An exercise in Gromov’s book on the subject asks the reader to prove a general homotopy extension principle for solutions of open partial differential relations. We will explain the content of this exercise, its solution and some applications.
